ENT
Otolaryngologists, or ENT specialists, are doctors that focus on treating conditions of the head and neck including the ears, nose, and throat. They can treat patients of all ages (from infants to seniors) for a broad range of conditions.
ENT doctors address conditions of the head and neck that affect equilibrium (balance) or the ability to breathe, swallow, smell, taste, or hear properly.
Ears
Inner and outer ear problems that can be addressed by an ENT include hearing loss and deafness, persistent or recurring ear infections, tinnitus, vertigo/balance disorders, eardrum perforation, and Eustachian tube problems.
Surgical ear procedures may include inserting “tubes” (grommets) into the eardrum, tympanomastoid surgery, and cochlear implant surgery.
Nose & Sinus Cavities
An otolaryngologist treats sinus and nasal problems including trauma or injuries, polyps, tumors, blockages, deviated septum, and recurrent sinus infections.
Common surgical procedures may include balloon sinus surgery, septoplasty (deviated septum repair), polyp removal, and endoscopic sinus surgery.
Throat
Throat conditions affecting swallowing, breathing, sleeping and glandular tissue can also be treated by an ENT doctor.
- Thyroid/parathyroid glands
- Voice box (larynx)
- Tonsils and adenoids
- Oral, nasal, skin, and throat cancer
- Sleep apnea and snoring
- Upper respiratory breathing function
Throat surgeries may include laryngoscopy, tonsillectomy & adenoidectomy (tonsil & adenoid removal), oesophagoscopy (esophageal examination), tracheostomy, biopsy, and removal of tumors, growths, and polyps.
Facial Cosmetic Surgery
ENT surgeons also specialize in enhancing the appearance of the eyelids (blepharoplasty), nose (rhinoplasty), and outer ear cartilage (otoplasty or ear pinning). They can also reconstruct the face after skin cancer removal or a disfiguring injury.
